Intent
At Ladysmith Infant and Nursery School, we believe music is a universal language that allows every child to express themselves, connect with others and experience creativity. We value music as an essential part of school life and aim to inspire a lifelong love of music in all our pupils.
Our music curriculum is designed to be rich, inclusive and engaging, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to sing, play, listen, create and perform. We provide a strong foundation in musical knowledge and skills, enabling children to grow in confidence, creativity and self-expression.

We recognise the important link between music and wellbeing, and aim to foster joy, confidence and a sense of belonging through shared musical experiences.
What do music lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?
Music is taught weekly through a structured and progressive curriculum that builds on what children already know. Lessons are practical, engaging and centred around active participation, giving all children the opportunity to explore music through singing, playing instruments, listening and movement. In Nursery and Reception, children are introduced to music through songs, rhymes, action games and simple listening activities, alongside opportunities to explore sounds using percussion instruments and respond physically to music.
In the Early Years, music and movement also form a valued part of every-day learning. Listening opportunities are planned to develop children’s ability to listen attentively and to move to and talk about music. Through regular opportunities to listen to music, children are supported to notice and respond to a steady beat by singing, tapping, dancing or using instruments. Children are supported to express their feelings about music and to understand that their response is personal and valued.
As children move into Key Stage 1, learning becomes more structured and develops key musical skills. Pupils build their understanding of pulse, rhythm and pitch, learn to sing with increasing accuracy and expression, and begin to play simple patterns on instruments such as glockenspiels. They also create and perform their own musical ideas and explore music from a range of cultures and traditions. Music is a valued part of school life, with regular singing assemblies and performance opportunities that help children develop confidence and enjoyment in sharing their learning.
How do we make sure every child succeeds?
We are committed to ensuring that all children can access and succeed in music. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build skills step by step, allowing children to develop confidence and competence over time. Lessons are practical and inclusive, with opportunities for repetition and revisiting key concepts to help embed learning. Activities are adapted to support the needs of all pupils, including those with additional needs, while still providing opportunities for challenge and creativity.
Assessment in music is ongoing and based on observation, listening and participation. Children are encouraged to reflect on their own learning and celebrate their achievements, both individually and as part of a group. We further support success by providing high-quality instruments and resources, exposing children to a wide range of musical styles and cultures, and offering opportunities to experience live music and performance wherever possible.
