Intent
At Ladysmith Infants, we believe that understanding the world’s major religions helps children to make sense of the diverse world in which they live. Through learning about different beliefs and practices, we promote values of tolerance, respect and inclusion.
We are proud to be part of a multi-faith community, and our RE curriculum reflects this by exploring a range of religions and worldviews. Children learn about special times, celebrations, places and traditions, helping them to recognise both similarities and differences in how people live and believe. This supports their moral, social and spiritual development and encourages them to respect others and challenge stereotypes, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
What do RE lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?
In the Early Years, RE is taught through Understanding the World, including whole-class teaching and carefully planned play-based provision. Children begin to explore different beliefs and celebrations through stories, role play and hands-on experiences. They learn about their own communities and those of others, noticing similarities and differences in traditions, special places and ways of life. This early introduction helps to build curiosity, respect and understanding from a young age.
In KS1, children take part in weekly RE lessons following the NATRE scheme. Learning is designed to be engaging, meaningful and appropriate to the age and stage of the children. Lessons are brought to life through storytelling, discussion and exploration of religious celebrations such as Christmas, Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah and Easter. Children have opportunities to handle artefacts, explore symbols and learn about special foods, clothing and traditions. Visits to local places of worship, or virtual experiences, further enrich learning and help children to develop a deeper understanding of different faiths.
Teaching encourages children to talk about their ideas, ask questions and begin to reflect on what they have learnt, supporting the development of early critical thinking and communication skills.
How we ensure every child succeeds?
We are committed to ensuring that all children can access and succeed in RE. Learning is carefully adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, with a balance of adult support, structured teaching and opportunities for independent exploration. Through continuous assessment, teachers identify next steps and provide additional support where needed, ensuring that every child can develop their understanding and confidence.
We use a range of engaging strategies, including storytelling, discussion, practical activities and play-based learning, so that all children can access the curriculum in ways that suit them. By creating an inclusive and respectful environment where all views are valued, we ensure that every child feels confident to share their ideas and develop a secure understanding of religions and worldviews.
