Intent
At Ladysmith Infant and Nursery School, we recognise that children are growing up in an increasingly complex and ever-changing world. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to help them navigate this with confidence, resilience and compassion. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, understand how their bodies change and make safe, informed choices.
We want every child to feel valued, supported and prepared for both the opportunities and challenges they may face. Through our curriculum, children develop self-awareness, empathy and a strong sense of belonging, enabling them to grow into responsible and active members of their community. We also recognise that learning extends beyond the classroom, and we aim to provide meaningful opportunities for children to develop confidence and independence through real-life experiences within a safe environment.
What do PSHE lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?
PSHE lessons are delivered using the Jigsaw programme, which provides a structured and progressive approach to learning. The curriculum is organised into six key themes
These themes are revisited and developed each year in an age-appropriate way. This approach allows children to build their knowledge and understanding over time while making meaningful connections across different areas of learning.
Lessons place a strong emphasis on discussion, reflection and sharing ideas, helping children to develop their ability to express their thoughts and understand the perspectives of others. Activities may include stories, scenarios, circle time and collaborative tasks. Each class also keeps a record of their reflections, allowing children to revisit prior learning and recognise how their thinking and understanding have developed. Learning is further enriched through assemblies and whole-school events linked to PSHE themes.
How do we make sure every child succeeds?
We are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and able to succeed in PSHE. Lessons are carefully adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, with opportunities for children to engage in different ways through speaking, listening, reflecting and participating in practical activities. A strong focus on emotional literacy helps children to build confidence in expressing their feelings and understanding others.
Assessment is ongoing and based on observation, discussion and children’s responses during lessons. Teachers use this to identify next steps and provide additional support where needed. Learning is regularly revisited to strengthen understanding and help children make links across topics. By the time children leave Ladysmith Infants, they are equipped with the confidence, resilience and personal skills they need to continue their learning and thrive in the next stage of their education.
