Intent

At Ladysmith Infant School, our computing curriculum is designed to introduce children to digital technologies and build strong foundations for future learning. We aim to develop confident, responsible and creative users of technology who can begin to apply their skills across the curriculum and in everyday life.

Through our curriculum, children will:

  • Begin to understand key computing concepts, including simple algorithms, early programming, data handling and how technology works.
  • Learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly while creating and exploring digital content.

Our vision is to ensure all pupils, regardless of background or ability, develop early digital literacy and confidence. We align our approach with the government’s Education for a Connected World framework, ensuring pupils can enjoy safe, meaningful and age-appropriate experiences online.

What do computing lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?

At Ladysmith, computing is taught through three key strands: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. These are revisited over time so that children can build on their understanding in simple, manageable steps.

Our lessons are carefully structured and informed by high-quality schemes such as Teach Computing and Kapow, adapted to meet the needs of younger learners.

  • Lessons include regular retrieval of prior learning, clear teacher modelling, simple vocabulary development and a balance of adult-led and supported practical activities.
  • Children use a range of technology, including iPads, Chromebooks and age-appropriate devices such as Beebots, alongside unplugged activities, to explore early programming, media creation and basic data handling.

Online safety is an important part of our curriculum. It is taught through Jigsaw PSHE and reinforced regularly in computing lessons and assemblies. Children are supported to understand how to stay safe, be kind online and ask for help when needed.

How do we ensure every child succeeds?

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all pupils, ensuring every child can take part and feel successful in computing. Teachers use ongoing assessment, observation and questioning to check understanding and adapt support where needed, addressing misconceptions quickly.

Children are given opportunities to practise and apply their learning through simple, engaging tasks, helping to build confidence and independence. By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils have developed the foundational knowledge and skills needed to use technology safely, creatively and with growing independence, preparing them for the next stage of their computing education or the next stage of their computing education.
