Intent

At Ladysmith Infant and Nursery School, we recognise the importance of a rich, varied and high-quality PE curriculum in supporting children's physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing. We believe that physical education should inspire children to develop a lifelong love of being active while building confidence, resilience, teamwork and respect.

Through our PE curriculum, children develop the fundamental movement skills that provide the foundation for future participation in sport and physical activity. From Nursery onwards, children learn how to move with increasing control, coordination and confidence, developing both their physical literacy and their understanding of healthy lifestyles.

We want every child to experience success in PE and to discover activities they enjoy. Through a broad range of sports, games, dance and physical activities, children develop important personal qualities such as determination, cooperation, fairness and respect. We encourage children to challenge themselves, celebrate achievement and understand the positive impact that regular physical activity can have on their physical and mental health.

What do PE lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?

Children participate in regular PE lessons that are carefully planned to build skills progressively across Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1. Teaching is supported through the Get Set 4 PE scheme, ensuring children develop fundamental movement skills before applying them within a range of sporting and physical activities.

Our lessons are active, inclusive and engaging. Children develop skills including running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching and coordination through a wide range of activities, games, dance and gymnastics. As children progress, they learn how to apply these skills in different contexts, work collaboratively with others and begin to understand simple rules and strategies.

Physical development is also promoted throughout the school day through outdoor learning, active play and opportunities for movement within the wider curriculum. Children are encouraged to develop confidence, perseverance, leadership and teamwork while learning the importance of leading healthy, active lives.

Alongside curriculum lessons, children have opportunities to take part in enrichment activities, festivals, competitions and sporting events that help foster enjoyment, participation and achievement in physical activity.

How do we make sure that every child succeeds?

We believe that all children can succeed in PE. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible, enabling every child to participate fully and achieve their personal best.

Teachers carefully adapt activities, equipment and levels of challenge to ensure all children can experience success whilst continuing to develop their skills. Continuous assessment through observation allows teachers to identify next steps in learning and provide appropriate support or challenge.

By creating a positive and encouraging environment, celebrating effort as well as achievement, and providing a broad range of physical experiences, we help children develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
