Intent

At Ladysmith Infants, we believe that art and design is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to nurture creativity, imagination and self-expression, enabling children to become confident, independent and reflective learners.

Our art curriculum begins in the Early Years, where children explore textures, colours and mark-making through a balance of continuous provision, child-led exploration and adult-guided experiences. We recognise the importance of the unique child and understand that every child follows their own artistic journey. Through careful observation and assessment, adults support children to develop their ideas, skills and confidence.

Building on this strong foundation, our curriculum inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own artwork. Children are introduced to a range of artists, cultures and styles, helping them to understand the role of art in the world, both past and present. As they progress, they are supported to think critically about their work and develop a deeper understanding of art and design.

What do Art lessons look like at Ladysmith Infants?

Art is taught through carefully sequenced units that build skills and knowledge over time. Lessons provide opportunities for children to explore, practise and apply key artistic techniques across a range of disciplines: , including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D work and collage.

Each unit of learning focuses on developing specific skills which are revisited and strengthened as children progress, ensuring clear progression across the school. Children experiment with a variety of materials and tools, learn about and respond to the work of significant artists, and develop their own ideas through exploration and sketching. Units culminate in a final piece that reflects their learning.

Drawing is given particular importance and is encouraged across the curriculum as a tool for observation and expression. Children are supported to take creative risks, express their individuality and reflect on their work, helping them to understand their progress and next steps.

How we ensure every child succeeds?

We are committed to ensuring that all children can access and succeed in art. From the Early Years onwards, learning is adapted to each child’s stage of development, recognising that every child’s artistic journey is unique. Through ongoing assessment and responsive teaching, adults support children to build confidence, develop skills and take the next steps in their learning. Our carefully sequenced curriculum ensures that key skills and knowledge are revisited regularly, allowing children to deepen their understanding and make secure progress over time.

We prioritise practical, hands-on experiences so that all pupils can explore, experiment and create using a wide range of materials. Teaching provides both support and challenge to meet individual needs, while opportunities to reflect and evaluate help children to recognise their achievements and improve their work. Exposure to a diverse range of artists and styles further inspires pupils, ensuring all children feel included and capable, and leave with confidence, creativity and a strong foundation in art.
